The genesis of this initiative came organically from our feeding programme for the homeless, “Dinners With Dignity”. The objective remains the same - not to treat the homeless and helpless like they are invisible but to help them move off the streets and to shelters when they allow us to and help Chennai become a more compassionate and caring civic society.
Karma Store is a pop-up store at relevant charitable institutions across Chennai, that the homeless are known to populate. Once a fortnight, we welcome the homeless and helpless with basic essentials that they can pick up as per their needs, no questions asked. The Karma Store offers clothes like shirts, lungis, trousers, sarees, nighties, soap, toothpaste and brush, bedsheets and whatever else they as for. Volunteers manage the store, collect information from the beneficiaries in a structured manner and there is a festive ambience as we engage with the people who walk in. A shop within their reach, where their pride and dignity is given importance, and no money is charged.
