Rooted in the Christian faith, the YWCA endeavours to emancipate women and girls, irrespective of race, culture and creed, and seeks to develop a membership that is responsive, through service, to the needs of a community in a changing world. The YWCA of Madras, provides a platform to vocalize issues that are plaguing society and ensures that aid is generated and made available. Their aim is to encourage you to reach out and help the underprivileged.
They offer a one year diploma in the following courses – DeskTop Publishing (DTP), MS Office, Tally, Assistant Nursing (Geriatric Nursing), Pre Primary Teachers Training (Early Childhood Care & Education), Corporate Secretary ship. These courses are recognized by TNOU and hey follow curriculum and books provided by them. In all, there are approximately 145 girls studying there.
Spoken English for a group of 43 girls (courses - Pre Primary Teachers training & Corporate Secy training). These girls are all Class 12 pass and all of them write English and some of them speak English as well. However, they are very diffident and don’t understand the language at all. They have the will to learn and are a focused lot. Their need is situational English and their TNOU book has an excellent capsule with several situations with questions, role play, interviews, etc. There is a need to flesh these out and create capsules around them. The idea is that we dovetail our efforts with what is taught in Communication Skills at Community College.
