SOS Children's Villages take action for children as an independent non-governmental social organization. With the SOS Children's Village concept, the organization pioneered a family approach to the long-term care of orphaned and abandoned children. SOS is a national level organization, with over 40 village set ups all over India. The concept is based on four principles.
The Mother: Each child has a caring parent.
Brothers and Sisters: Family ties grow naturally.
The House: Each family creates its own home.
The Village: The SOS family is a part of the community
In Chennai - A community set up in Tambaram, they are a 5 acre property, with 15 homes that presently house 10 children and 1 mother each, 10 aunts, a temple, a primary and preprimary school, a medical centre, an office block, an auditorium and an upcoming library. The schools and the medical centre are open to people from the neighbourhood as well, the purpose being to integrate the village into society, to some extent.
Volunteering requirements would be:
• Yoga for the children
• Spoken English
• Art & Craft
• Music & Dance
• Volunteer to help with professional advice on the library set up
• Reading to the children
• Dental or eye camps
• They want to shift one of their visually challenged girls to a residential school.
• Motivational talks for the mothers and aunts
• Something for the ladies on a monthly basis
